6 Things to Do After Grad School

23 May

It has finally sunk in that I’m done with grad school. With this new feeling of freedom I’ve started thinking of all the things I haven’t had time to do because of school. These are the 6 things to do post-graduation.

1. Read a book

The first week after I was done with graduation I picked up a book. It’s a great feeling to read for pleasure. You no longer have to plow through pages at a time of stiff academic material, so reading whatever you want can be fun. I purchased a bunch of books while I was in school and now I can start to get through them.

My roommate let me borrow “50 Shades of Grey” and it’s far from great literature, it’s more of a smutty, easy-read, and is just what I needed. I’m already on to the third book in the series and it feels great to read something and just not think.

Don’t judge – it’s so bad, it’s almost good.

Also on my list:

The Beautiful and Damned – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Books 2 – 3 in the Hunger Games series – Suzanne Collins

The Rum Diary – Hunter S. Thompson

As you can see I’ve been on a bit of a novel to movie kick. I think these books may get me through the summer. If you are on Goodreads friend me if you want to stay up on what I’m reading and I would love to hear some suggestions.

2. Catch up on all the TV you’ve missed

I don’t know about any other recent grads, but I hardly watched any TV while I was in school. What better way to veg out than in front of a TV getting tangled into a great storyline. I’m currently getting caught up on Gossip Girl and Mad Men. I also discovered a new show on HBO called Girls, which is funny, awkward and a new guilty pleasure while I wait for True Blood to start up again.

3. If possible take a vacation

I worked through my grad program so I knew I wanted to take some time off. Originally I was thinking a stay-cation would have been great, just taking a week off this summer to see Matt, but little did I know he had bigger plans. He booked a trip for us to go to Aruba, so early July I will be on my way to sandy beaches and tropical weather. Going far away isn’t always possible with a work schedule or financially, but it’s important to just take some time out for yourself.

I will be lying on this beach in a little over a month!

4. Update your resume and apply for jobs

If you already have a job you love, great, stick with it. I went to get my masters knowing I wanted more knowledge of the marketing field and now that I’m done I’m starting to look for jobs that interest me in the field.

Once you graduate update your resume and list any significant projects or classes you took while in school. Applying for jobs can be tedious, but the sooner you get your resume out the better. The economy has been rough on new job seekers, so don’t get discouraged. Read up on ways to improve your resume and cover letter and take advantage of any of your schools career services center.

5. Have a social life

During school I didn’t have much of a social life. I didn’t see my family or friends nearly as much as I would have liked. Go out for a drink with friends or co-workers, make the drive to see your family, or just call someone up. This is a time to reconnect, so enjoy it.

6. Get back into a hobby

For me I can start to run and workout on a more regular schedule. I also signed up to run my half marathon a few months after graduation since I knew I would have time to prepare for it. Running and working out is important to me and it’s something I enjoy. Do something you enjoy. It can be working out, crafting, volunteering, anything that makes you happy.

Basically after graduation you should do something that you enjoy. Whether it’s starting a new hobby or just relaxing.

This Weeks Workouts

Since my gym membership expired I have decided not to renew it since there’s the possibility that I may be moving before the end of the summer. So instead of hitting the weights at the gym I’ll be back to doing online videos and weights to supplement my runs while I finish up my training for the half marathon in June.

Monday

3 miles – 22:32

Tuesday

10 minute online video

Wednesday

3 mile run – around 24 minutes, plus 10 minute online video

Thursday

Mock 5k, 2 times with a negative split

Friday

Strength training or video

Saturday

Hill repeats: Warm-up 10 minutes on flat surface. 5 x 60 second sprint, rest 1 minutes between. Cool down 10 minutes.

Sunday

Rest

What are some great books or mindless reads you have gotten into recently?

Valentine’s Weekend Festivities

13 Feb

The weekend was way to short, but I had a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day with Matt. Friday night I got into CT and we pretty much just relaxed. We exchanged small gifts. I got Matt a box of Valentine’s Russell Stover Chocolates and he got me a box of Reese’s Valentine’s chocolates (chocolate and peanut butter is my favorite combination).

Saturday we went to see the Vow.

I wanted to go see a romantic movie this weekend. I wasn’t expecting much going into this movie, but I was actually surprised how much I liked it. It was incredibly sweet and not totally predictable, which I liked. Matt joked that he had never heard so much crying in a theater. Parts of it were sad but I would definitely recommend it.

After the movie we went for our couples massage! I think I enjoyed the experience a little more than the massage. It wasn’t the typical swedish or deep tissue massage I’m used to. The masseuse stretched my limbs a lot during the massage and it involved some shaking. Some parts were actually a little uncomfortable. I was kind of looking forward to just lying there, but this massage included a lot of movement. I did some searching online and I think we got a thai or shiatsu massage. After the massage we were offered a glass of wine some chocolates. We were able to sit down and just enjoy that. I did feel relaxed afterward and it was great sharing the experience with Matt, but I doubt I would go back to that spa again. I’m going to stick with relaxing massages.

I couldn't resist this picture, too cute.

For dinner we went to this small pizza place that had amazing fresh bread and the pie we got was fantastic. We grabbed a bottle of wine for home and ended up watching a movie on NetFlix. I have wanted to watch An Affair to Remember for a long time, so we ended up watching that. I love old movies and this one is definitely a classic.

Sunday I got caught up on Gossip Girl and I’m super frustrated with this season. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning. I love the fashion, but I think I really watch for the Chuck and Blair storyline. Now it’s just getting a little ridiculous, I hate that Chuck’s been chasing Blair for so long. I hope the show develops his character by himself without Blair for a while.

So that sums up my romantic little weekend with the boy.

Did anyone else see any good movies this weekend?

Gossip Girl Inspired Fashion

7 Nov

Happy Monday! The ballet on Saturday was amazing. The orchestra was great and played the music beautifully. It was definitely an experience. I liked seeing Romeo and Juliet done as a ballet and the dancing was really impressive.

With day light savings time ending it was pretty dark when I got out of work. I’m not a fan of running in the dark around the city so I will be hitting the treadmill at the gym a lot more often. I’m going to have to find some ways to cut back on the boredom, but for today I did 3.5 miles on the treadmill in 28:42

Gossip Girl had a week off, but I’m excited because it is back on tonight. I don’t follow many shows, but I watch Gossip Girl regularly. My college roommate and I started watching Gossip Girl my senior year of college. We started watching season 2 on TV and I decided to buy season 1 so we could get all caught up. We watched almost the whole season in a day and since then I’ve been hooked.

I’m attracted to the drama and the over the top lifestyles, but I really love watching Gossip Girl for the fashion. Two of the main characters are Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively). They each have very different fashion styles.

Blair Waldorf

Blair wears a lot of structured and feminine pieces. She’s known for wearing headbands and bright colored tights. The episodes in the winter are particularly fun because Blair will be spotted in coats with bold colors or patterns. Small vignettes throughout the series show that she is inspired by old Hollywood, specifically Audrey Hepburn – she’s a girl after my own heart.

Serena van der Woodsen

Serena or “S” is definitely a free spirit. She combines a mix of form-fitted and flowing pieces to create a carefree style that is always glam.

Is anyone else a Gossip Girl fan? Which character’s style do you like the most?
