New Running Shoes and Month Two of Training Begins

3 May

So to follow-up on my last post, I went to the doctor on Friday and they basically recommended that I stop running in my old running shoes (which I already suspected) and they also gave me some exercises to prevent plantar fasciitis. Some of the pain I was experiencing was starting to show signs of plantar issues. They told me to continue to ice, use ibuprofen for inflammation and use different shoes.

Right after my appointment I went to Marathon Sports right in Cambridge. I’ve heard  a lot of great things about them, specifically that they will fit you for running shoes. When I got there they had me take off my shoes and walk around to determine my gait. Then they had me run outside in a pair of shoes to view my running form. They told me that I have a normal gait, which was surprising because I’ve heard that I over pronate in the past.

After that they brought out a bunch of sneakers for me to try out. I was able to try them on and jog outside on the sidewalk in them to get a feel for them. It was a great experience and I’ve never been to a running store that was that thorough.

I ended up with a pair of Asics Gel Excel 33‘s and I absolutely love them so far.

My new running shoes!

I’ve done long and short runs in them and couldn’t be happier. I can’t stand heavy running shoes so finding something light weight was important to me and these shoes are not only light, but are nicely cushioned. The tongue of the shoe also stays in place while I run, which hasn’t been the case with some of my other sneakers. I wasn’t a fan of the color at first, but they’ve grown on me. I also haven’t been experiencing foot pain which is the most important part, so I’m happy.

This week I started month two of my training which includes some new workouts for the strength training days. Here is what my week looks like:

Monday

Track 6 x 400 Goal: Time Yourself. Beat Your Time with each 400 that you run. Optional: Strength Train WO

No strength training for me, but here were my 400 times:

1:47
1:44
1:38
1:35
1:28
1:26

Tuesday

Tempo Run: 2 miles EASY

I ran this in 16:07 on the treadmill.

Wednesday

Strength Train A

There were a bunch of new workouts and I’m really sore today.

Thursday

Tempo Run 2: 2 mile Goal: Meet/ Beat Tuesday’s Run Time

I did beat Tuesday’s time at 15:50 outdoors. I caught a bunch of traffic lights so this could have been faster.

Friday

Off – resting to get my PR in the 5k on Saturday

Saturday

5K Race – Beat your PR

Sunday

Off

To follow the training schedule I ended up signing up for a 5k this Saturday. I haven’t run a race in a while so I’m excited. I just looked at the weather today though and it’s expected to rain on Saturday. I’m still going to try my hardest to get my personal record and I will try not to let the weather deter me from that. I’ll post soon to say how the race went and also to list the strength training exercises I’m doing this month.

Does the weather effect your runs?

Done With School! Half Marathon Training Wks 3 & 4

26 Apr

I have major news. I had my final presentation on Monday and I am basically done with school! I need to show up for class next week to watch a presentation, but then I graduate on May 14. I’m so excited to finally be done and be just weeks away from having my master’s degree in marketing in my hands. All the hard work, long nights, lack of sleep and social life all paid off and now I can sit back, relax and enjoy.

Due to the fact that the end of the semester was super busy I got behind on posting my training schedule. So I’ve listed what I’ve been up to for weeks three and four of my Nike half marathon training program.

First I need to note that I’ve been experiencing a lot of problems with my foot and I think my sneakers have been causing all this discomfort.

I bought the Nike Lunareclipse +2 running sneakers in the beginning of February and around that time I’ve been experiencing some major issues. Tendinitis flareups and ankle and joint pain. My last pair of running shoes were also Nike’s and I loved them after I wore them in. These shoes felt great the first two weeks, but I started to notice more problems. I’m thinking this shoe just wasn’t meant for my foot.

I’m going to the doctor tomorrow and will hopefully be referred to a specialist, but the Lunareclipse’s have been retired until further notice. I’ll be going back to one of my old pairs until this gets figured out. I’m going to bring them to the appointment and see if the doctor thinks they are causing the issues. I really hope not since they were a bit of an investment on my part. I’m really hoping I didn’t drop $120 on a pair of running sneakers that could be causing injuries and I won’t be able to use. If that’s the case my running sneaker search will be starting again.

Well on to my training.

Week 3

I switched around the workouts in the beginning of the week to work around my schedule.

Monday

Tempo Run: 3 miles EASY

Ran this in 23:53.

Tuesday

Strength Train A

Wednesday

Track 5 x 400 Goal: Time Yourself. Beat Your Time with each 400 that you run.

My times:

1:49
1:42
1:35
1:34
1:28

Goal = success!

Thursday

TR2: 3 mile Goal: Meet/ Beat Tuesday’s Run Time

I ran this in 24:13. I didn’t beat Tuesday’s time because I think I took it out too fast earlier in the week.

Friday

Strength Train B

Saturday

5 mile run- flat with some rolling hills

I was able to run my regular route which I haven’t done in almost a month, since I started this program. I ran this in just around 42 minutes and I felt like I was dragging.

Sunday – OFF

Week 4 (This Week)

Monday

Took the day off since I had my final presentation and needed some rest. Here is the workout I should have done: Hill Repeats: Warm Up 10 min. flat. 10 x 20-30 sec hill repeat: 30 sec rest between each. Cool Down 10 minutes flat  Optional: Strength Train WO

Tuesday

Tempo Run: 2.5 miles EASY

This was a nice easy run. I’m surprised there are still so many short runs involved in this program. I think it’s to increase my quickness to get a PR for the 5k, but I’m getting nervous I won’t be ready once the distances start to increase. I ran this in just about 21 minutes.

Wednesday

Strength Train Workout A

These workouts are super tough. A lot of step ups and squats. My legs were dying after this one.

Thursday

Tempo Run 2: 2 mile Goal: Meet/ Beat Tuesday’s Run Time

I just completed this workout and absolutely destroyed Tuesday’s time. I ran it in19:08.

Friday

Strength Train Workout B

Saturday

4 mile run- flat, comfortable pace

Sunday – OFF

So that’s what I’ve done to date and what I’m scheduled to do for the rest of the week. I’m hoping my appointment tomorrow goes well and I can get in with the specialist right away to determine what’s going on with my foot.

I hope everyone’s having a great week. Anyone have any races coming up?

President’s Day Weekend Shenanigans

21 Feb

I took about a week off of running because I was experiencing some pain on the top of my foot. I think it may have been tendonitis from wearing some flats that didn’t fit that great. Last week included a lot of resting, ice and ibuprofen. I’m feeling a lot better now, every once in a while I’ll get a little pain in my left foot, but I’m still icing it occasionally.

Speaking of running, I was contacted on twitter by a company called Celliant. They mailed me a free performance pack that consisted of 2 pairs of socks, a sweatband and pair of wristbands.

I haven’t used sweatbands in year, but the socks ended up being super useful and comfy. I wore them Sunday and yesterday on my runs.

What I personally like about the sock is the cushioning throughout the bottom of the foot. There is also some great arch support and the top of the sock offered a lot of breathability. The nice soft cushy feel of the fabric can also be felt on the sweatbands.

What actually differentiates this company is the fabric they use. Their fiber increases blood flow and blood oxygen levels in the tissue of the body. The technology is used in their own branded athletic clothing and some Adidas and Reebok clothing listed on their web site.

Weekend Fun

One of my best friends from home came to visit this weekend. Jill came to visit Saturday and spent the night. It was awesome being able to catch up since we only saw each other briefly during the holidays and this was her first time visiting me in Boston. We walked around Cambridge during the day, then headed into Boston at night with another friend from high school. It was a lot of fun showing her around the city.

Me and Jill waiting for the T.

Jill left Sunday and I basically vegged out on the couch. I bought season 2 of Mad Men a few weeks back and I had a bit of a marathon this weekend. I have one more episode until I’m done with the season and I’m kind of obsessed. I love that it’s about the advertising industry (which I’m interested in getting in to), the fashion from the early 60’s was amazing, and the script and directing is definitely thoughtful and different.

I didn’t just watch TV all weekend though. I went for two runs outside which felt amazing. I really can’t wait for the weather to warm up and the days to get longer. I also went to the gym for a run and a little lifting.

Yesterday I made it out to the mall for a little President’s Day shopping.

H M top, £3.99, H M top, £3.99, Banana Republic slim fit pants, $90

My trip ended up consisting of mostly basics. I have been searching for a nice ankle length cigarette pant for a while and this one from Banana Republic fit perfectly and came in a petite size. I also grabbed the tanks to act as layering pieces for the cold and they will look great on their own come the spring and summer. Not shown here I also picked up two pairs of running shorts from old navy and an orange pencil skirt from H&M that I can wear for work. I love the color of the H&M skirt and I think it will be great for color blocking.

I have the worst time finding shirts. I’m done buying pants and bottoms for a while, until I can get some decent tops for work and day to day wear.

I had a great weekend and not only had fun, but was able to get a lot of school work done.

Did anyone else find any good deals this weekend?
